The Learning Center offers many services including one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, online tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, study space, academic skills coaching, and workshops.
We provide face-to-face, drop-in tutoring for all El Centro students in a variety of subjects. Tutoring is provided on a walk-in basis; tutors circulate among all students and help on a first-come, first served basis.
During these sessions, students work with an experienced tutor who serves as the facilitator for group discussions and problem solving. The tutor is trained in group study techniques that encourage active learning.
During these sessions, students work with a cyber-tutor through Blackboard IM; the cyber-tutor will ask probing questions to help students build a better understanding of their course material. Beginning in Spring 2013, students may submit papers through our email tutoring service. Guidelines for online services are detailed on the Online Tutoring page.
In SI sessions, students work with a student leader who has already successfully completed the target course. The student leader is trained in group study techniques that encourage active learning. Please see the Supplemental Instruction tab for more information.
Students can work on their own with the Learning Center videos and computer software programs by signing in at the front desk and requesting the resource. Please bring headphones to view videos. We do have a limited number of headphones for students to check out for use in the center. Cubicles and computers are available for quiet study and work if they are not being used for workshops or group tutoring.
Academic Skills Coaching
Work one-on-one with the tutor coordinator or a member of the Learning Center to improve your academic performance. Students can discuss methods to improve retention and study skills. Stop by A350 to make an appointment.
Come with your friends and classmates for presentations on topics like time management, taking notes in class, test anxiety, passing your exit exams, and more. Check by the Learning Center each semester to see what workshops will be offered.
The Learning Center tutor coordinator works with students who wish to start or join a study group in any subject. The tutor coordinator can assign space and a tutor. Contact Mary Wood (firstname.lastname@example.org
