Mission Statement

The Credit ESOL Program at El Centro College provides speakers of other languages the opportunity to improve their grammar, reading, writing, and listening/speaking abilities in American English in order to qualify for regular college classes, increase their employability, and enhance their social skills.

General Information

ESOL Image 2 Students come to El Centro College from many countries around the world to improve their American English skills in order to advance their academic and professional opportunities. Our college is located in the middle of the dynamic downtown area in the center of Dallas, Texas.
Classes are offered at four (4) levels of ability in each of the following language skill areas:
  • Grammar
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening/Speaking
Placement in these four language skill areas is determined by scores on the Compass Placement Test, which the students take immediately upon registration.
Students who successfully complete the requirements for the upper levels of ESOL Reading (ESOL 0044) and Writing (ESOL 0054) are eligible to move directly into college level courses such as English 1301 and many others.
Classes are offered weekday mornings and evenings, as well as on Saturdays. Limited space is reserved in every credit ESOL class for Continuing Education students, who because of residency situations or cost, may prefer to register for credit ESOL classes through the Continuing Education Department.  Please call 214-860-2226 for more information about concurrent enrollment.
Students are appropriately placed, according to the results of their placement test, in one of four levels in each of the four language skill areas.  They then advance progressively upward through the four levels until they successfully complete the ESOL program and move into regular college courses in their chosen fields of study and career preparation.
The Credit ESOL Program is part of the Communications, Mathematics, Developmental Studies, and Teacher Preparation Division. The Division Office is in room A341. For further information, call 214-860-2323, and speak with Jeff Gregory, the program coordinator.

Intensive English Program

ESOL Image 1 International students residing in other countries can also apply for our Intensive English Program known as The Institute of English Language Training at El Centro College.
