This course will address the current events, skills, knowledge and attitudes and behaviors pertinent to phlebotomy. An introduction on basic venipuncture, technical abilities and skills essential to phlebotomy will be reviewed and assessed. You must have a passing score (according to syllabus) to attend PLAB 1023 course. Fifteen (15) maximum number of seats available, submit your complete application starting 06/16/15. Textbook required: Phlebotomy Essentials. You must have Continuing Education Academic Advisor approval for this course.  Insurance is required for this course.

Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions including vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessing, professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. Topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. The curriculum is designed to provide the didactic information and competencies required by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASPT) for certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. Prerequisites: Completion of health records, including current immunizations and tuberculosis test, high school diploma or the equivalent (GED) and WorkKeys® Assessment. Proof of current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR Healthcare Provider Certification. (Textbook and liability insurance required). A criminal background check and drug screening will be required for entry into the clinical, be prepared to complete screenings on the last day of class, specific instructions will be provided. You must have Continuing Education Academic Advisor approval for this course.
