Preparation for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities. Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team. This will be achieved through lecture, skills laboratory practice and clinical experiences. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will qualify to take the state Skill and Written Examination for Nurse Aide Certification. Successful completion of the examination is required for placement on the Texas Certified Nurse Aide Registry. Additional expense includes the following:

State Testing Fee: $ 85.50
Criminal Background Check: $ 45.00  -
Criminal Background check MUST be completed on second day of class.   You must be be prepared to pay for Criminal Background Check at that time.  Instructor will give you list of information you will need to submit online during the first day of class.

Textbook: Nursing Assistant Care, The Basics 4th Edition;

Workbook: Nursing Assistant Care, The Basics 4th Edition.

Lecture dates:  09/08, 13, 22, 27,    10/06, 11, 20, 25,   11/03 and 08
.     . Open Lab Dates:  09/29,   10/04,  10/13 and  10/18.

You will also need navy blue scrubs, white nurse or white leather athletic shoes, and a watch with a second hand. Other supplies needed: stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and a gait belt. An information sheet with details will be available at the Continuing Education Office. You must have Continuing Education Advisor approval for this course. Submit application packet starting June 2016.

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. The clinical experience will be 40+ hours (specific dates are given in class) at a long term care facility from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm. You must have C.E Advisor approval for this course.

Class meets at Grace Presbyterian Nursing Home. Mandatory Clinical Orientation
