Focuses on performance improvement and quality management in health care. Theories fundamental to Total Quality Management (TQM) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) are explored and applied to the health care setting. Evolution of efforts to measure quality in healthcare organizations and attitudes of physicians concerning these efforts are examined. Statistical tools and use of CQI teams are described. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Performance Improvement Standards are covered, with emphasis on expectations of the medical staff organization. The description of a hospital risk management program and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) required monitors are also reviewed.

This course examines the process for verifying an application for membership to a medical staff organization. Assignments cover education and training required for medical professionals, the American Board of Medical Specialties recognized specialties and subspecialties, the differences between osteopathic medical and allopathic medical training, and the pre-application and application processes. Steps in verifying the credentials presented in an application for medical staff membership are reviewed in depth, including red flag areas. The Johnson v Misericordia Community Hospital case is reviewed for identification of errors made in processing an application. The process for routing an application through medical staff channels for approval by the governing body is studied.
