This critical class provides an overall review of HIPAA requirements with emphasis on privacy and confidentiality. Defined topics include protected health care information (PHI) and individual identifiable healthcare information (IIHI). Participants will gain knowledge of the rules and regulations contained in the health care information portability and accountability act of 1996 (HIPAA) for using, protecting and securing patient information. Participants will be educated in understanding the covered entity’s (CE) responsibilities, understanding patients’ rights, and definition of a “business associate” with regard to responsibilities of the CE to notify and obtain a signed business associate agreement with each entity that the practice/business works with that could have access to PHI. In addition, changes to the HIPAA Legislation under the American Recovery and Reinvestment act of 2009 will be reviewed.
